Welcome to Cycling Europe with a baby!

This website tells the story of our rather adventurous attempt to ride across Europe with our baby son.

Between May and August of 2006 we backpacked and cycle toured through 6 countries, pedalling over 1,300 kilometres and spending 68 nights in a tent with only the equipment we could carry. Our tandem bike and baby trailer wove it's way primarily through river valleys, along bikepaths built by rivers and canals. We travelled lightly, ate simply and enjoyed the sights, sounds, and diversity of continental Europe.

Our son Reuben loved the outdoor lifestyle and was warmly welcomed by the locals. The huge number of bikepaths in Europe meant that we rode on traffic-less paths for about 85% of our tour.

Cycle-touring is a great way to travel and we hope the story of our adventure will encourage you to get on your bike and GO GO GO! Get on your bike and get out there! To quote GK Chesterton "The world will never starve for want of wonders, but for want of wonder."

Shelley's diary gives you descriptions of our daily adventures, with lots of photos of the beautiful and quirky found along the way.
